Texas House votes to abolish Texas Lottery Commission; save Texas lottery
SUMMARY: The Texas Legislature is set to abolish the Texas Lottery Commission (TLC) as part of the sunset review process, transferring lottery and charitable bingo oversight to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) by September 1. This move follows scandals and investigations into the TLC. Senate Bill 3070, passed unanimously by the Senate and amended by the House, sets a sunset review for TDLR’s lottery division between 2027 and 2029. Key changes include ending lottery mobile apps and removing some transparency and investigation provisions. If signed by Governor Abbott, the lottery will transition to TDLR this summer, and the TLC will cease to exist.

SUMMARY: A deadly explosion occurred at an LA County Sheriff’s Department facility east of downtown Los Angeles, killing three deputies from the arson and explosives detail. Authorities believe the accident happened while deputies were moving explosives, not during a planned training exercise. This marks the largest loss of life for the department since 1857. Aerial footage showed a backpack near a police SUV with a shattered window close to the blast site. Federal agents, including former Attorney General Pam Bondi, are assisting in the investigation. Officials confirmed the remaining explosives have been rendered safe, with no further threat.

Carp release in Lake Austin raises concern among local fisherman
SUMMARY: Austin plans to release 350 sterile grass carp into Lake Austin to control hydrilla, an invasive plant that disrupts recreation and navigation. While grass carp eat hydrilla, local fishermen oppose the move, fearing harm to the lake’s bass fishery by removing vital underwater vegetation. A prior effort from 2011–2013 released 32,000 carp, which devastated native plants. Officials stress the new, smaller-scale approach focuses only on the lake’s eastern section. Critics like fishing guide Carson Conklin argue alternative methods, such as aquatic mowing, are better solutions. Authorities hope to avoid past mistakes while managing hydrilla’s spread responsibly.
