Texas advances to 3rd WCWS championship series in past 4 seasons with win over Tennessee
SUMMARY: Katie Stewart’s solo home run in the fourth inning gave Texas the crucial run to defeat Tennessee 2-0 in the Women’s College World Series semifinal at Devon Park, Oklahoma City. Texas pitchers Mac Morgan and Teagan Kavan combined to shut down Tennessee’s offense, with Kavan recording a program-record eighth save. Texas’ defense made key plays in the seventh inning to preserve the win. The Longhorns will face either Texas Tech or Oklahoma in the championship series beginning Wednesday.

Longhorns hope a simple approach leads to breakthrough in WCWS finals against Texas Tech
SUMMARY: The Texas Longhorns are making their third appearance in four seasons in the Women’s College World Series championship. This year, they face Texas Tech’s dominant pitcher NiJaree Canady, who boasts a 0.90 ERA and 304 strikeouts, despite a lingering hamstring injury. Texas has defeated Canady three times previously, relying on disciplined hitting and the classic drill “pepper” to counter her pitching. Texas Tech coach Gerry Glasco, in his first season and with a personal connection to Texas coach Mike White, plans strategic pitching to exploit Texas’s weaknesses. The best-of-three series begins Wednesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

Taylor Pride denied city proclamation after 4 years of approvals, sparking backlash, petition
SUMMARY: Taylor, Texas, held Williamson County’s first official LGBTQ Pride celebration in 2021. The upcoming fifth annual Taylor Pride Music and Arts Festival is scheduled for June 28, 2024. However, Taylor’s Mayor Dwayne Ariola denied this year’s Pride Month proclamation request, citing other June observances like Juneteenth. The denial sparked backlash from Taylor Pride organizers and the community, leading to a Change.org petition with over 1,300 signatures demanding a reversal. The city has faced past LGBTQ+ inclusion issues, including controversy in 2022 over Christmas parade rules that excluded LGBTQ+ groups, prompting Taylor Pride to host a separate parade amid protest opposition.
