Tennessee weighs pros, cons of cutting foreign language graduation requirement
SUMMARY: The Tennessee State Board of Education is considering eliminating the two-year foreign language high school graduation requirement. Currently, students must complete two years of a foreign language or obtain a waiver. Chairman Bob Eby proposed a study group to explore replacing language credits with other courses like STEM or fine arts, aiming to offer more flexibility. Supporters argue this could better prepare students for post-secondary success, while opponents emphasize foreign language’s role in critical thinking, cultural understanding, and workforce competitiveness. Some universities recommend but don’t require language credits. A petition opposing the change has over 3,400 signatures. No formal decision has been made yet.

Tennessee lawmakers study legislation around first-degree murder
SUMMARY: In Tennessee, the felony murder law allows people to be convicted of murder even if they didn’t directly kill someone, as long as they were committing a felony when a death occurred. Sen. Raumesh Akbari proposes changing this to ensure fairness for those not intending murder. Supporters argue all participants in violent felonies share responsibility, while critics, including victims’ families and those affected, call for more precise accountability. Some, like Ashlee Sellars, served decades despite not planning or causing a death. The Senate Judiciary Committee discussed the issue in a summer study but took no action; a bill may be considered next legislative session.
