Supreme Court limits nationwide injunctions; allows Trump to partially enforce birthright citizenship order
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to allow parts of President Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship to take effect, limiting federal judges’ ability to issue nationwide injunctions. The decision narrows lower courts’ blocks to only apply to 22 Democratic-led states, expectant mothers, and immigration groups suing the policy. Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated that “universal injunctions” likely exceed courts’ authority, though the ruling did not address the order’s constitutionality. The order denies citizenship to children born in the U.S. if their parents lack permanent legal status. Dissenting justices warned the ruling threatens rights broadly and criticized judicial overreach in support of Trump’s agenda.

The driver and passenger were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Lawsuit alleges delayed ER treatment led to patient's death
SUMMARY: Mercy Hospital in Springfield faces a malpractice lawsuit after delayed care allegedly led to Glenda Michelle Baxter-McDowell’s death in summer 2023. The 51-year-old woman arrived at Mercy’s ER in June with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and symptoms of bowel obstruction but waited untreated for 12 hours. Her condition worsened, resulting in dehydration, possible bowel strangulation, and sepsis. Upon treatment, she vomited and aspirated while lying down against warnings, causing cardiac arrest. After resuscitation, she died three days later from acute respiratory syndrome secondary to aspiration pneumonia. Missouri’s health department cited Mercy for EMTALA violations contributing to the delay. The plaintiff seeks damages; no court date is set.

SUMMARY: Since astronomical summer began June 20 in Kansas City, the average temperature has been 83.3°F, ranking as the 3rd warmest start to summer since 1950. Meteorological summer (June 1–August 31) has been only slightly above average. The forecast calls for hot, sunny weather today with gusty winds and increasing storm chances by evening, potentially bringing heavy rain north of the metro. Rainfall has been uneven, with much of the city still dry despite several 90°+ days stressing grass. A persistent front could trigger storms if it sags southward later today, with scattered storms expected through the weekend and a slight cooldown early next week.
