Stolen car suspect with 100-plus charges released, arrested again
SUMMARY: Joshua Eugene Cole, a local man with over 100 pending charges including car theft and breaking into storage units, was released on a surprisingly low $3,000 bond despite a history of high-dollar crimes and a known auto chop shop operation. Police found keys, a 3D printer, and evidence linking him to stolen vehicles. After leading police on a chase in a stolen Mercedes, Cole was arrested again on June 5th for stealing a Dodge Charger and now faces 15 additional charges in Durham. Judges have discretion on bond amounts, but questions remain about why his initial bond was so low. Cole’s attorney opposes cash bonds, stressing his client’s innocence until proven guilty.
Joshua Cole was arrested for stealing cars in multiple counties, but was allowed to walk after posting $3,000 bond. After WRAL Investigates started asking questions, Cole was arrested again on multiple charges, including using his home as a chop shop to dismantle stolen cars.

Duke Energy relents, provides power to new Chapel Hill affordable housing project
SUMMARY: Duke Energy has restored power to P.E.A.C.H. Apartments in Chapel Hill, enabling air conditioning to prevent mold amid an ongoing dispute over billing methods. The nonprofit developer, EMPOWERment Inc., chose a single-meter setup to support rooftop solar and reduce costs for low-income tenants, but Duke initially refused service, citing state law requiring individual meters. EMPOWERment argued the law allows a master meter if utilities are included in rent, as planned for the 10-unit complex. The dispute, now before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, could soon be resolved, allowing tenants to move in by August or September as construction nears completion.

Travel scams on the rise: Here's how to stay safe while planning your summer vacation
SUMMARY: Travel scams are increasing as more travelers book flights, hotels, and rental cars online. Scammers create fake websites mimicking major airlines or popular booking sites, often promoted via targeted social media ads. Yvonne Caron from Brand Shield warns travelers to verify deals by visiting official websites. According to the FTC, travel scams caused $274 million in consumer losses, averaging nearly $1,000 per victim. Scammers also fake customer service numbers, especially during flight disruptions. To stay safe, only book through reputable sources, carefully read cancellation policies, avoid private messaging for bookings, and always double-check contact information to protect your money.
