SSM Health Medical Minute: Unique stroke risks in women
SUMMARY: Strokes are the third leading cause of death in women, with one in five women at risk. While often seen as a men’s health issue, women face higher stroke mortality due to longer life expectancy and specific risk factors, such as migraines, hormonal changes, and menopause, especially with hormone replacement therapy. Pregnancy-related strokes, though rare, can be severe if not detected early. Early symptoms include severe headaches and vision changes. However, up to 80% of strokes are preventable by managing high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, sleep apnea, and obesity.
Stroke is often considered a men’s health issue, but the reality is it’s the third leading cause of death in women. One in five women will experience a stroke in their lifetime, and understanding the risks and warning signs can save lives.

IT worker scheme uses U.S. companies to fund North Korean nuclear weapons program
SUMMARY: Fourteen individuals are indicted for allegedly funding North Korea’s nuclear program through a scheme involving remote IT work in the U.S. The suspects reportedly used stolen or borrowed U.S. identities to secure jobs, generating $88 million over six years. The FBI linked one laptop, used to funnel money back to North Korea, to St. Louis. While some identities were stolen from the dark web, others were provided by U.S. domestic enablers. FBI officials urge businesses to thoroughly vet remote IT applicants to prevent further infiltration, as they suspect more North Korean nationals may be operating within U.S. companies.
