SUMMARY: The Southern House Spider, one of the largest spiders found in homes, is generally harmless despite its size, reaching 2 inches across. Largely unseen, these nocturnal spiders hide in secluded places like closets and garages, weaving messy non-sticky webs that trap prey using a Velcro-like mechanism. They squeeze into surprisingly narrow cracks, thanks to their flattened bodies. While male spiders roam in search of mates, females remain in their webs. Often mistaken for the venomous Brown Recluse, Southern House Spiders are docile, have poor vision, and may freeze or flee rather than bite when disturbed. Their intimidating appearance includes a velvety coat and “bling” on their legs. Observing them from a distance is recommended as they help control household pests.
