SUMMARY: A bridge in Harrison County has been dedicated to honor Willie E. King, a soldier killed during D-Day in 1944. His son, William Pete Steel, never knew his father, who died when he was six months old. King was part of the 29th Division, the first wave landing on Omaha Beach. Steel inherited his father’s belongings in 2017, including his Purple Heart and Bible. In 2023, after meeting State Senator Mike Seymour, Steel succeeded in getting the bridge named after his father. Though Steel never met King, the memorial bridge allows him to honor his father’s sacrifice.

A World War II soldier who died during the Normandy Invasion is the latest namesake of a bridge.
