DeSantis says he wants ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ to be filled before moving forward with Camp Blanding’s detention site plans
SUMMARY: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that before moving forward with plans to convert Camp Blanding near Starke into an immigration detention site, the current facility, “Alligator Alcatraz,” must reach full capacity. The Camp Blanding site could house 2,000 to 3,000 detainees using temporary structures, similar to the Everglades facility built in eight days. DeSantis emphasized a cautious approach to avoid underuse of the new site. The controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” has faced criticism over poor conditions, including flooding and unsanitary issues, which DeSantis and Republican officials deny, stating minimum standards are met. Local lawmakers have challenged restricted access to the facility.

Russia launches new attacks on Ukraine with the countdown to a US peace deadline underway
SUMMARY: Russian forces launched heavy attacks on four Ukrainian cities overnight, injuring at least 15 and targeting energy infrastructure in Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, Vinnytsia, and Odesa. The strikes, involving 400 drones and a ballistic missile, come ahead of a Sept. 2 deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for a peace deal, threatening severe sanctions on Russia if unmet. Despite two previous failed peace talks, no new talks are scheduled. Trump pledged more U.S. weapons, including Patriot systems, while some officials criticized the deadline, fearing it may enable Russian territorial gains. The war has caused massive casualties, with Putin aiming to outlast Western support.
