Snow, Sleet, and Freezing Rain: A guide to understanding winter’s wonders and hazards
SUMMARY: Winter weather presents various types of precipitation, each with unique characteristics and safety concerns. Snow forms when temperatures are below freezing, creating soft snowflakes. Sleet occurs when partially melted snowflakes refreeze into ice pellets, leading to slippery conditions. Freezing rain, which starts as snow, melts in warm air and freezes upon contact with cold surfaces, creating a hazardous ice glaze. Graupel consists of soft, pellet-like snowflakes coated with supercooled water droplets. Understanding these forms helps in planning for winter hazards, as freezing rain and sleet can significantly increase accident risks on icy roads. Always monitor weather updates for safety.
