SUMMARY: Martin Benz, a 46-year-old Dallas lawyer, was shot and killed by police during a SWAT standoff after he charged officers with a knife. Family members, concerned about his mental health and recent erratic behavior, had called 911. Benz had cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor and injured himself. Police responded to reports of a suicidal man armed with a knife who refused commands and tasers. Benz had recent criminal charges, including aggravated assault. Despite officers’ attempts to de-escalate, Benz charged at them, prompting the shooting. No officers were injured. The Dallas Police Department will release body camera footage as per protocol.
