Science Experiments: Creating Elephant Toothpaste
SUMMARY: During summer, science teacher Lexi Morgan from Madison Middle shares a fun at-home experiment: creating elephant toothpaste. Using simple household items—instant yeast (blue kind), water, dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and food coloring—kids can watch an exothermic reaction that produces heat and foam. The yeast acts as a catalyst breaking down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas, while soap traps oxygen to form foam. The experiment is quick, messy, and visually exciting, often done in class around Halloween using a carved pumpkin. It’s a great indoor activity that combines fun with learning about chemical reactions.

MEMA opens disaster recovery centers for storm relief
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has opened 12 disaster recovery centers to assist residents affected by the March tornado outbreak. Partnering with FEMA and the Small Business Administration, these centers offer various federal aid programs, including individual and housing assistance, with grants up to around \$43,600. Applicants should have identification, income, banking, insurance, and damage documentation ready for faster processing. Assistance also supports those underinsured, covering costs beyond insurance limits. FEMA has already provided nearly \$3 million in aid, but damage estimates exceed \$18 million, far surpassing federal thresholds. Centers operate in Covington, Jefferson Davis, Marion, Smith, Walthall, and Montgomery counties. Visit ms.mema.org for details.
