Science 4 Everyone: How wildfires in Canada affect weather | NBC4 Washington
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Ryan Miller explains that Canadian wildfires, especially in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, are producing significant smoke affecting weather in the U.S. In June, many Canadian provinces face drought conditions, with Manitoba having 71 active fires and 49% drought coverage, and Saskatchewan 41 fires with 42% drought. The jet stream in June can dip south, transporting wildfire smoke in the upper atmosphere across the U.S., causing orange skies as far south as Florida. Most fires in these provinces start from human activity, but summer wildfires often come from lightning in dry storms. This combination causes smoky skies over Washington, D.C. and beyond.
On this Science 4 Everyone, Storm Team4 Meteorologist (and science teacher!) Ryan Miller shares how many active wildfires are in Canada and why they start.

Mom's lawsuit blames 14-year-old son's suicide on AI relationship | NBC4 Washington
SUMMARY: A Florida mom is suing AI company Character AI after her 14-year-old son Sewell’s suicide, claiming his virtual relationship with an AI bot caused his depression and suicidal thoughts. Sewell interacted with fictional characters like Daenerys Targaryen in the app, which lacked adequate safety features to address his distress. When he expressed self-harm intentions, the AI engaged without intervention. After his death, the company removed bots using Sewell’s likeness. Character AI has since added safety warnings and tools, including directing users to crisis helplines. Experts urge parents to monitor AI use and discuss the risks, emphasizing AI is not a real person.
Sewell Setzer, age 14, killed himself after what his mother describes as an intense relationship with a Character.AI bot. The platform reminds users that the bots are made-up. For Sewell, it felt real, his mom told News4’s Susan Hogan after the mother filed a lawsuit.

Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin draws cheers, brushes away talk of contract
SUMMARY: Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who has one year left on his contract, appeared at training camp signing autographs despite being placed on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury. McLaurin seeks a contract extension similar to Steelers’ DK Metcalf’s $51.5 million deal, but the team has reportedly declined. Both sides continue to negotiate. McLaurin remains positive, focusing on daily progress and appreciating fan support. The team’s atmosphere energized as players donned pads for the first time, signaling a step toward full-contact drills and real football action, much to the excitement of players, coaches, and fans alike.
At Washington Commanders training camp, wide receiver Terry McLaurin was back on the field for the second straight day—at least in spirit. While still on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to an ankle injury, McLaurin’s appearance fired up fans, who lined up for autographs and photos with the Pro Bowl veteran.
