SC Lawmakers target insurance fraud as fake crashes and claims surge
SUMMARY: Insurance fraud is a growing problem in South Carolina, involving staged medical claims and fake car crashes by organized rings targeting innocent drivers. The South Carolina Department of Insurance and law enforcement have formed a task force to address this issue, but currently have insufficient resources. With only about eight investigators statewide, they handled 5,000 complaints last year but opened just 152 cases, making 71 arrests. Experts emphasize that fraud increases insurance premiums for honest policyholders. South Carolina ranks 15th nationwide for questionable claims, a high rate relative to its size. The task force plans to include insurance companies in future meetings for broader collaboration.
