Tim Rogers, a multi-instrumentalist from Lucedale, Miss., has been a musician since childhood, starting with a drum set from Sears. Over the years, he recorded eight records locally, but recently recorded a new EP titled Kind Words & Cool Water in a Nashville studio. Inspired by a saying from a family friend, the EP includes seven songs about George County places and people, blending country and southern rock genres. Encouraged by his pastor and manager, Howard Lips Jr., Rogers connected with Cinderella Sound Studio and recorded with top musicians. Country Music Hall of Fame harmonica player Charlie McCoy also contributed, making the experience a dream come true for Rogers.

In 2009, she met Bryce, a Hattiesburg native, who revealed Mississippi’s Gulf Coast and Pine Belt were also severely impacted. Bryce recalled enduring power outages, living under tarp roofs, and the community’s resilience. Neighbors helped each other, churches became support centers, and schools welcomed displaced students. The storm’s damage extended beyond New Orleans, affecting entire regions. Despite hardship, Mississippians showed unwavering determination and unity. Katrina’s legacy is not destruction but the steadfast spirit of recovery and neighborly support that defines Mississippi.

SUMMARY: At nine years old, the author experienced Hurricane Katrina, the devastating storm that ironically united the community. Though they slept through most of the storm, the aftermath was unforgettable: broken trees, oppressive heat, no power, and thick humidity. In Foxworth, Mississippi, neighbors came together like never before. The author’s grandmother, Mama Ardessie, used her rare gas stove to cook meals for the community, while the author’s mother helped with biscuits and syrup. Despite uncertainty, laughter and kindness filled the air. Katrina revealed the true spirit of Mississippi—neighbors supporting each other to survive and thrive amid hardship.
