Rise of Tommy John surgeries in Houston-area youth baseball highlights growing concern for experts

SUMMARY: Young baseball pitchers face increasing risks of serious arm injuries, particularly Tommy John surgery, due to heavy workloads and lack of awareness among parents. Houston Methodist physical therapist Corbin notes he sees four to five new patients under 18 weekly for throwing injuries, many requiring UCL reconstruction. Alarmingly, even children as young as 12 are affected. Dr. David Litner highlights the heartbreaking reality of young athletes facing severe injuries, while pitching coach Dean Dakis emphasizes the importance of training regimens focused on functional strength, biomechanical awareness, and nutritional support to prevent such injuries, advocating for a health-first approach to performance.

For adolescent pitchers playing baseball across Houston, major arm injuries are on the rise.
Making the strenuous movements that are necessary in competitive pitching can lead to serious elbow damage for any pitcher, and the risks are even higher for the still-developing arm of a youth or teen pitcher.
Along with the risks of needing Tommy John surgery for a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL), pitchers also run the risk of suffering Little League Elbow, a condition caused by suffering trauma to a developing elbow plate.

Despite a rough first half with 10 consecutive incompletions, Manning showed flashes of promise and scored twice on the ground. Sarkisian emphasized Manning’s mental struggle rather than physical injury and expressed confidence in his growth and consistency.
