Associate Professor Scottie Cash of The Ohio State University notes that while social comparison on social media can amplify anxiety and depression, platforms can also help teens feel connected. Cash encourages parents to use the “Five C’s”: child, content, calming down, crowding out, and communication. These guidelines can help parents better understand their children’s digital lives and create opportunities for connection. Used mindfully, social media might buffer some mental health challenges instead of worsening them.

In contrast to modern concerns, some new research has found some possible positive effects for teens using social media.
