Pope Leo 'concerned' about AI's impact on children
SUMMARY: Pope Leo XIV warned about AI’s impact on young people’s intellectual and neurological development during a Vatican conference on AI and ethics. He emphasized that access to information doesn’t equate to true wisdom, which involves understanding life’s deeper meaning. While acknowledging AI’s benefits in health and science, the pope cautioned against its misuse for selfish gain, conflict, and diminished human openness to truth and beauty. He stressed the importance of ethical AI development that protects human dignity, culture, and diversity. Echoing Pope Francis, Leo has made AI risks central to his papacy, advocating responsible AI governance amidst varying global regulatory approaches.

Israel targets and kills Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif in Gaza as journalist toll grows
SUMMARY: Israel’s military killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif and others in a Gaza airstrike, confirmed by Gaza hospital officials. Israel accused al-Sharif of leading a Hamas cell, allegations Al Jazeera denies, calling the strike a “targeted assassination.” The strike also killed Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Qreiqeh and four other journalists sheltering near Gaza’s largest hospital. This incident follows an intensified Israeli smear campaign against journalists documenting the war, including prior accusations against other Al Jazeera staff. The UN condemned the strike as a grave breach of international law. The Committee to Protect Journalists states at least 186 journalists have died in Gaza, marking this conflict as the deadliest for reporters.

Tropical update: Tracking two disturbances for possible development
SUMMARY: Tropical waves in the Atlantic basin are being closely monitored this week. One wave near the coast of Africa has a 50% chance of developing over the next seven days, while another in the central Atlantic has about a 20% chance and may fizzle out. A possible secondary wave could form near Africa as well. This pattern aligns with typical Atlantic hurricane season trends, which are quiet in June and July, peak around September 10th, and decline through October. Both the Euro and GFS models currently keep these disturbances north of the Caribbean, but rain chances and isolated storms will continue into next week.
