Palm Bay suspends school zone speed cameras again, this time through rest of school year
SUMMARY: Palm Bay has suspended its school zone speed camera program for the rest of the school year due to concerns about its accuracy, reliability, and transparency. This marks the second pause this year after complaints about glitches causing incorrect violations. The cameras, supplied by RedSpeed USA, detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph in active school zones and issue $100 tickets after review by a traffic officer. The city aims to improve the system to meet community standards before resuming. Violators can pay fines online, request hearings, or contact RedSpeed directly for assistance.

Danish leader says ‘you cannot spy against an ally’ after reports of US gathering Greenland info
SUMMARY: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen criticized reports of U.S. intelligence gathering on Greenland, calling spying against an ally unacceptable. Denmark summoned the top U.S. diplomat following a Wall Street Journal article claiming officials under U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard sought information on Greenland’s independence movement and resource sentiment. The U.S. Embassy declined comments. Frederiksen dismissed the report as rumors. Gabbard condemned leaks, accusing the Journal of aiding “deep state” actors. Greenland’s Prime Minister rejected U.S. claims of buying the territory. Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized Arctic sovereignty applies, affirming Greenland is part of Denmark.

Lightning strikes tree just feet from Florida home: Caught on home surveillance camera
SUMMARY: A lightning strike hit a tree just feet from a home in Orman Beach, Florida, captured on a neighbor’s surveillance camera. The intense strike caused the tree to explode and catch fire, scattering debris, and startling the residents inside. The storm produced over 1,000 lightning strikes, with lightning temperatures reaching around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Fox 35’s meteorologist Laurel Blanchard advised avoiding open fields, metal, water, and especially staying under trees during thunderstorms. She emphasized the importance of heading indoors when thunder roars, as lightning can strike miles away from the storm. Fortunately, no one was outside during the strike.

A dramatic lightning strike in Volusia County sent shockwaves through a neighborhood Wednesday, splitting a tree just feet from a home and sending residents rushing to check on loved ones.

Florida Democrats consider opening primaries amid effort to rebuild party power
SUMMARY: Florida Democrats are exploring opening primaries to include no-party-affiliated voters as part of rebuilding their party’s strength for 2026. Despite recent defections and claims that the party is “dead,” party chair Nikki Fried remains optimistic about a “blue wave” in upcoming elections due to national economic and political instability. Democrats point to narrower GOP margins in special elections and high-profile Democratic figures visiting Florida as signs of renewed momentum. Republicans dismiss these as temporary setbacks. Opening primaries would broaden voter participation, especially among independent and younger voters, but would require legal or legislative changes, making it a long-term goal.

As Florida Republicans grapple with internal tensions and legislative gridlock, state Democrats are quietly working to revive their struggling political brand.
