Hurricane season begins; why you need to stock up on supplies now
SUMMARY: The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins today and runs through November, with experts predicting an above-average storm season. Preparation is crucial, as storms like Hurricane Sally caused prolonged power outages. Local hardware stores like Paris Ace Hardware in Foley are already stocked with emergency essentials such as batteries, water, generators, and plywood. Supplies like chainsaws can quickly sell out once storms approach, making early stocking vital. Residents are encouraged to check their hurricane kits now. Additionally, a weather radio programming event will be held Wednesday at Spanish Fort Ace Hardware to help residents stay informed and prepared.

The forecast is still quiet for now, but hurricane season is just getting started. Sunday marks the first day of the 2025 hurricane season, and from now through the end of November, everyone will be keeping a close eye on the tropics.

Smoke, Dust, and Northern Lights: Alabama’s weather forecast stays dry to start the week
SUMMARY: Alabama’s weather starts the week dry with hazy skies caused by wildfire smoke from Canada lingering over the Deep South. This smoke, not Saharan dust, has created beautiful sunrises and sunsets with purple and pink hues. While tropical development is suppressed by dust over the Atlantic and Pacific, the Space Prediction Center issued a G4 storm watch, indicating a chance to see Northern Lights on the northern horizon, though haze may limit visibility. Temperatures remain cool in the 60s and 70s but will rise into the mid-80s by midweek. By late week, humidity and thunderstorm chances increase with the summer pattern returning.

SUMMARY: Canadian wildfire smoke continues to cause hazy skies across Alabama, especially in northern areas like North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley. While air quality remains safe with no alerts locally, regions further north near the Dakotas and Minneapolis face hazardous conditions. The haze will persist today with mostly dry weather and highs in the low to mid-80s. By midweek, increasing Gulf moisture will raise humidity and temperatures toward the upper 80s and possibly near 90 degrees, particularly in West Alabama. A stormier pattern with more showers is expected to return toward the weekend.
