SUMMARY: Over Labor Day weekend, hikers ascending Colorado’s Huron Peak, a 14,000-foot mountain, encountered an unexpected treat: a man dressed in an ice cream cone costume handing out frozen snacks from a 60-pound pack. The ice cream man quickly became a local legend, delighting tired climbers like Blaine and Katie Griffin and Christopher Whitestone’s children. SUMMARY: Scientists, using seismic data from NASA’s InSight lander, have discovered that Mars has a solid inner core composed mainly of iron and nickel, similar to Earth’s. The inner core extends about 380 miles (613 km) from the planet’s center and is surrounded by a larger liquid outer core reaching up to 1,100 miles (1,800 km). The study, led by Daoyuan Sun, suggests Mars’ core crystallization may still be ongoing. Despite these findings, questions remain about the core’s exact composition and structure. With InSight no longer operational, further seismic data is unavailable, limiting deeper understanding of Mars’ interior and magnetic history.

SUMMARY: U.S. employers added only 22,000 jobs in August, signaling a cooling labor market amid uncertainty over President Trump’s economic policies, including widespread tariffs. The unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, the highest since 2021, with significant job losses in manufacturing, construction, and federal government sectors. Healthcare was the main growth driver. Revisions showed job cuts in June, marking the first losses since 2020. Economists attribute the slowdown to Federal Reserve rate hikes and Trump’s trade policies. The weak data boosts expectations of Fed rate cuts. Trump has pressured the Fed and fired the Labor Department economist over the disappointing reports.
