NTSB calls for immediate changes at Reagan airport
SUMMARY: The NTSB is calling for immediate changes at Reagan National Airport following a deadly midair collision between a passenger jet and a helicopter in January, which killed 67 people. The incident has prompted a plan to modernize air traffic control systems, replacing outdated technology like floppy disks and headphone jacks with wireless and fiber optic radar systems. Investigators revealed thousands of near-misses near the airport, leading the FAA to ban most helicopters from the area and start using AI to identify safety risks at other airports. The FAA had failed to recognize these hazards earlier.
Everyone on board the plane and the helicopter were killed in the January crash.

U.S. Sen. Padilla blasts Trump ‘path toward fascism’ in LA immigration crackdown
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla of California was forcibly removed and handcuffed at a press conference after attempting to question DHS Secretary Kristi Noem about military deployments in Los Angeles. Padilla condemned President Trump’s use of troops to target immigrants and suppress protests, calling it authoritarian. The incident, caught on video, has drawn criticism and support across party lines. Padilla emotionally recounted being detained and raised concerns over democratic erosion. DHS claimed agents didn’t recognize him, despite video evidence. House Speaker Mike Johnson called for censure, while Senate Democrats defended Padilla’s actions and warned of growing threats to democratic norms.

State lawmakers moving quickly on bill to regulate THC, Delta 9 products
SUMMARY: North Carolina lawmakers are fast-tracking legislation to regulate intoxicating hemp and THC products like gummies, vapes, and drinks. The Senate bill, more restrictive than the House version, would ban sales to anyone under 21, limit THC content, require product testing, and impose retailer licensing overseen by the Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). Packaging aimed at children would be prohibited, and products would be banned on school grounds. Kratom and synthetic THC products would be reclassified as controlled substances. Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Governor Josh Stein support tighter controls. The Senate may pass the bill this week, but House agreement remains uncertain.
State lawmakers want to keep THC-laden drinks and gummies out of the hands of kids. The Senate and House are working on measures to limit the sale of those products.

Humanity at risk? New warning from ‘godfather of AI’
SUMMARY: AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “Godfather of AI,” warns that artificial intelligence could pose a 10–20% chance of wiping out humanity. In a recent interview, he said superintelligent machines may eventually see humans as obsolete, comparing the shift in dominance to humans and chickens. Hinton raised concerns over current AI threats, including cyberattacks, bioengineered viruses, autonomous weapons, and job displacement. He predicts AI will soon outperform people in most tasks but says jobs requiring physical skill, like plumbing, may remain safe longer. Despite the dangers, Hinton believes AI has great potential in healthcare, education, and data-driven industries.
Geoffrey Hinton says super-intelligent machines could one day decide that humans are no longer needed.
