NMB seeks resident input on short-term rental ordinance changes

SUMMARY: North Myrtle Beach held a community event for residents—not short-term rental (STR) owners—to give feedback on STR regulations. Nearly 200 attended, with most supporting stricter rules addressing issues like parking, speeding, and rental stay lengths. Residents, such as new homeowner Michelle LeBaron, described ongoing parking problems caused by nearby STRs. The city currently has about 6,000 known STR units but lacks a comprehensive ordinance, relying on scattered rules for parking, trash, and noise. Interim ordinances adopted four years ago have proven insufficient. Over 180 residents favored creating a new, comprehensive STR ordinance, with city council expected to revisit the issue later this year.

Nearly 200 people piled into North Myrtle Beach City Hall Tuesday for a community feedback event focusing on short-term rentals.

The event was geared toward residents who do not own a short-term rental.

Those residents could participate in feedback activities, which revealed some of the top concerns are parking, speeding and safety related to short-term rentals.

Michele Lebaron, a new homeowner who lives near a short-term rental, said the parking situation has become a nightmare.

“Literally Memorial Day we were stuck inside our house, we literally couldn’t get out,” Lebaron explained. “I brought pictures to show and it’s not just Memorial Day it’s all the time. The owner, you call him and he says call the cops.”
