SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton, currently a category 2 storm, is generating concern as it approaches Florida, potentially intensifying to a category 4 or 5. Impacts are expected Wednesday into the night, especially affecting the western peninsula and areas like Orlando, with significant storm surge risks of 8 to 12 feet. Locally, weather remains pleasant with highs in the 80s and cooler mornings, especially north of I-12, where lows could reach the upper 50s. A weak cold front will bring some relief but little change in temperatures. Overall, the week ahead looks beautiful without rain forecasts, while Florida braces for the hurricane’s effects.

Hurricane Milton will stay well south of our area and no impacts are expected locally. It will be a warm, sunny week.

SUMMARY: After Bolt’s Downtown closure, Lafayette’s queer community faced challenges finding safe, visible spaces amid political erasure of queer identity. Candice Broussard, a late-coming-out queer artist, found most community spaces were intimate and hidden, discovered through word of mouth, making belonging isolating yet meaningful. Pride Acadiana and queer-owned businesses like Straw Cove Bakery foster inclusivity year-round, not just during Pride Month, offering visibility and belonging. Events like Queer Kickball and grassroots gatherings fill gaps but highlight the lack of permanent safe spaces. With Bolt reopening as The Library, there is hope for more accessible, enduring queer community hubs in Lafayette.

SUMMARY: Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast is closing its Louisiana health centers in Baton Rouge and New Orleans on September 30, 2025, ending over 40 years of service. The decision comes amid ongoing political opposition and judicial challenges targeting reproductive health care providers. Planned Parenthood offered a wide range of services including cancer screenings, birth control, gender-affirming care, and abortion assistance. Leadership cited relentless political attacks as key reasons for closure. Last year, nearly 18,000 visits were recorded at Louisiana centers. Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill praised the closure as a victory for the pro-life movement and protection of life in the state.
