New execution methods may soon come to Florida. Here’s why
SUMMARY: Starting July 1, 2025, Florida will allow new execution methods for death row inmates under HB 903, which expands beyond lethal injection and electrocution to any method “not deemed unconstitutional.” This change arises amid nationwide shortages of lethal injection drugs, as manufacturers stop supplying drugs like pentobarbital. States such as South Carolina and Alabama have begun using firing squads and nitrogen gas for executions. Florida’s law aims to ensure executions proceed constitutionally despite drug shortages. Opponents warn the law broadly expands execution methods without specifying them, but it was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and passed despite dissent.

FL drivers frustrated with school bus camera tickets still can’t contest them
SUMMARY: Thousands of Florida drivers fined for passing stopped school buses via camera systems in counties like Hillsborough, Polk, and Miami-Dade face delays in contesting these fines. Despite a 2025 law allowing local appeals, the process is still being established, leaving many drivers frustrated. Some claim unfair fines where stop arms weren’t out or children weren’t crossing. Over 287,000 violations have generated nearly \$43 million, with vendors collecting up to 70%. The camera vendor BusPatrol insists the program aims to improve safety, but appeals likely won’t start until fall 2025. Polk County has paused issuing fines until a new appeal process launches July 1, 2025.
