Mississippi Lottery president talks funds and upcoming chances

The president of the Mississippi Lottery Jeff Hewitt paid a visit to WXXV to talk about the success of the Mississippi Lottery.

Hewitt says the lottery exceeded the state’s revenue expectations this year.

When jackpots rise, people are more likely to try different avenues to win, such as scratch-offs and that’s what can lead to a rise in revenue.

Each year, the state allocates the first $80 million in lottery revenue for infrastructure and the rest of the funds raised go to education.

Hattiesburg man pleads guilty to spring break shooting in Biloxi

SUMMARY: Dontavis Omar Magee, 24, pled guilty to shooting in Biloxi’s Surf Style parking lot during Spring Break 2023, striking a Biloxi police officer and four civilians. He was sentenced to 40 years, with 15 suspended, resulting in 25 years to serve plus 5 years post-release supervision. Investigators identified Magee through surveillance footage, photos from Hattiesburg Police, and social media images. Magee, 21 at the time and with no prior felonies, admitted to the shooting but claimed he had been threatened by two victims. He is expected to be extradited to Georgia for unrelated charges.
