Mississippi house bill proposes state inmate work program with MDOT
SUMMARY: A new bill in the State House of Representatives could enable state prison inmates to work on road maintenance and pothole filling directly for the Department of Transportation (DOT), rather than through sheriff’s work programs. This initiative aims to address staffing shortages while aiding inmate reintegration into society. However, concerns about safety and liability due to lack of law enforcement supervision in the DOT have been raised. Local correctional programs already utilize inmate labor for various projects, which has shown to reduce recidivism and foster pride in their work. The bill is currently under review in the House Corrections committee.
Inmates can often be seen picking up trash along roads in Mississippi, but they could soon be working on the roads as well if a bill is passed.
