Eight injured in Jackson shooting, one in critical condition
SUMMARY: A mass shooting in North Jackson’s North Mart Plaza left eight people aged 21 to 40 wounded, with one in critical condition. Capitol Police responded just after midnight and transported the victims to a hospital. City Councilman Kenneth Stokes highlighted residents’ fear of gun violence, which keeps people indoors and restricts their activities. Stokes emphasized the need for increased police presence to improve safety, urging the hiring of 500 police officers with adequate pay. Gun violence remains a serious issue in Jackson neighborhoods, prompting calls for stronger law enforcement and community support. The investigation is ongoing, and police request public assistance.

First West Nile Virus death reported in Mississippi for 2025
SUMMARY: The West Nile virus has been present in Mississippi since 2001, with fluctuating case numbers over the years. August is peak mosquito season, increasing the risk of infection. The virus spreads primarily through bites from infected mosquitoes. Precautions include avoiding outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, wearing long sleeves despite the heat, and using insect repellent containing DEET. Although cases are currently lower than in previous years, the first West Nile-related death of the year occurred in Washington County. Symptoms resemble the flu and appear days to weeks after a bite. Medical care focuses on managing symptoms, as there is no cure. Removing standing water helps reduce mosquito populations.

Canton residents face shocking water bill increases
SUMMARY: Canton residents are raising concerns over a significant increase in their water bills, some rising by $200 to $300 or more. Canton Municipal Utilities (CMU) issued a rate update in June, explaining that rates were too low for the past decade to cover rising costs like labor, energy, and materials, leading to guaranteed bill increases. Some residents, including a local business owner, say they weren’t properly notified and feel the hikes exceed the stated 25% increase, calling it price gouging. Many are struggling to afford the higher costs. A town hall is planned, and CMU will discuss assistance next Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to contact CMU with questions.
