SUMMARY: A grand jury cleared Morehouse Parish Deputy Cody Caner in the November 2024 fatal shooting of Marquez Crowder during a traffic stop, sparking controversy and a press conference by the NAACP demanding body cam footage release. Meanwhile, Caleb McCrae, accused in a fraternity hazing death, appeared in court with updated bond conditions allowing state travel with tracking. A state bill mandating anti-hazing training for all students moved closer to law, along with a bill enabling full disciplinary record sharing among schools. Weather will clear with cooler temperatures tonight and mostly sunny skies Saturday, but rain and warmer temps return next week.

SUMMARY: After over 30 years of dormancy, the Holy Rosary Institute campus in Lafayette’s Northside is undergoing major redevelopment, supported by $4.5 million in funding secured since 2019. The historic vocational school for Black girls, closed in 1993, is transforming into a multipurpose community hub featuring a museum, restored chapel, event spaces, shops, and offices. Plans include a new Northeast public library on a 5-acre site, pending parish council approval of a 99-year lease. The Prime Time Head Start program will begin in Windolph Hall this fall. The redevelopment, led by Dustin Cravins, aims to revitalize the area while preserving Black Catholic cultural history.

www.youtube.com – WDSU News – 2025-05-31 19:30:31

SUMMARY: Quiet weather continues this weekend in Southeast Louisiana as hurricane season officially begins tomorrow. A cold front lies south, with high pressure keeping conditions calm and comfortable. Temperatures range from mid-60s overnight to highs near 90°F through the next week. Mostly clear skies dominate, with a slight chance (10-20%) of showers or thunderstorms through Wednesday, increasing to 30-40% by Thursday into next weekend. Smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to lower air quality early next week, along with Saharan dust entering the Gulf later in the week, which may cause haze but help suppress tropical storms.
