Mistrial declared in Timothy Herrington's capital murder trial for death of Jimmie “Jay” Lee
SUMMARY: Breaking news from Mississippi: a mistrial has been declared in the murder case of Timothy Harrington, accused of killing Ole Miss student Jimmy J. Lee, who vanished in July 2022. Despite extensive evidence collection, including cell phone data, Lee’s body was never found, complicating the prosecution’s case. The jury deliberated for 9.5 hours but ultimately deadlocked, reporting a split verdict of 11 to 1. The judge indicated plans for a retrial, potentially in a different jurisdiction. A meeting between the defense and prosecution is expected to discuss next steps, though no timeline for a retrial has been established.
After 10 days of trial and more than nine hours of deliberations, a jury still couldn’t agree on whether or not Timothy Herrington killed Ole Miss student Jimmie “Jay” Lee. The prosecution pointed out several inconsistencies in Herrington’s story, but were never able to recover Lee’s body or any significant DNA evidence linking Herrington to his murder. The jury ended up 11-1, with a single juror holding out and causing a mistrial.
