Take Precautions to Ensure Summer Safety
SUMMARY: The Mississippi State Department of Health urges residents to prioritize summer safety amid extreme heat risks. To prevent heat stroke, stay hydrated with water and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Protect against mosquito-borne illnesses by using repellents, wearing covering clothing, and eliminating standing water. Use SPF-15+ sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during peak sun hours to reduce skin cancer risk. Practice water safety by never swimming alone, watching children closely, and learning CPR. Keep foods properly chilled outdoors to prevent illness. Never leave young children in hot cars and regularly check on vulnerable older adults.

Biloxi Shuckers celebrate 10 year Anniversary with a big win!
SUMMARY: The Biloxi Shuckers celebrated their 10th anniversary on June 7 at Keesler Federal Credit Union Park. The first 1,000 fans received rally towels, and Chef Terrell Warren served the special “Frisbee Feast.” Original 2015 front office members were recognized. The Shuckers hosted the Montgomery Biscuits for game four of their home stand. Mississippi State alum KC Hunt started strong with several strikeouts. The Biscuits scored first on a single by Gregory Barrios and a run by Homer Bush Jr. The Shuckers responded quickly: Matthew Wood and Jheremy Vargas reached base, followed by Luke Adams’ 109-mph three-run homer. Biloxi won 5-2, closing the celebration with fireworks.

Mississippi seeing a shortage of physical therapists
SUMMARY: Mississippi faces a growing shortage of physical therapists, meeting only 79% of state demand, causing delays in care, especially in rural areas. Over 50 million Americans seek physical therapy annually, but Southeast Mississippi struggles with limited availability. To address this, Mississippi State University’s Meridian campus will launch a new hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2029, its third such program statewide, aiming to retain graduates in their communities. Clinic directors highlight hiring challenges, particularly in rural towns where attracting therapists willing to relocate is difficult. The initiative hopes to increase local therapists, reducing wait times and improving care access.
