Maryville construction continues on Carpenter's Grade Road Project

SUMMARY: Construction on Maryville’s long-planned Carpenter’s Grade Road Project is underway, aiming to improve quality of life in Blunt County. The $9 million, federally funded multi-phase project began in March, focusing on upgrading about one mile of road, improving drainage with iron pipes, and adding traffic lights at a busy 4-way (technically 5-way) intersection used by thousands daily. As Maryville becomes more urban and densely populated, officials want to modernize narrow roadways to accommodate cars, trucks, pedestrians, joggers, and bicycles. Some neighbors have concerns about road closures and congestion but see the project as a necessary response to growth. Completion is expected by late 2026.

Some neighbors have mixed feelings about the congestion the construction could bring.

States with the most extreme temperatures: Where does Tennessee stand?

Published

www.wkrn.com – Alex Libby – 2025-07-23 16:17:00

SUMMARY: Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky are currently under heat advisories and extreme heat warnings, a stark contrast from six months ago when extreme cold warnings were in effect. Nashville’s temperature swung from a January low of 8°F to a summer high of 98°F, a 90° difference. Tennessee’s all-time temperature range spans 145°, from -32°F to 113°F. Surrounding states like Kentucky have similar ranges, while northern plains and Rocky Mountain states exhibit more extreme swings due to dry, thin air. Montana holds the nation’s largest range at 187°F. Hawaii experiences the smallest range under 100°, influenced by oceanic moderation. Data sourced from NOAA.

SUMMARY: Three people—Dwan Payne, Kamari Burnham, and Nala Kelly—were charged with aggravated burglary after allegedly kicking down a door and entering a home where a woman shot Burnham in self-defense. The woman who fired the shot and Burnham had fought days earlier; Burnham is the ex-girlfriend of the homeowner’s boyfriend. Burnham was shot in the stomach, hospitalized, and released on \$50,000 bail. Kelly attended court and waived her preliminary hearing; her bond was lowered to \$75,000. New album honors the National Symphony Orchestra, snubs Trump’s Kennedy Center changes

Published

on

wpln.org – Justin Barney – 2025-07-23 04:37:00

SUMMARY: Pop pianist Ben Folds released a live album celebrating the National Symphony Orchestra and protesting President Trump’s changes at the Kennedy Center. After Trump became chairman and replaced much of the Kennedy Center’s board with loyalists, Folds resigned as artistic adviser, citing broken trust and increased politicization. Trump’s appointee, Richard Grenell, claimed the changes brought ideological diversity, but Folds criticized the loss of artistic integrity. The Kennedy Center and symphony suffered significant subscriber losses and revenue declines. Folds’ album, recorded before the 2024 election, aims to support the orchestra, emphasizing that art survives beyond political conflicts.
