March 2025 “Blood Moon’ turns red during lunar eclipse
SUMMARY: On the morning of March 2025, South Florida witnessed a total lunar eclipse, marking the first in the U.S. in three years. Stunning images from the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association showcased the “Blood Moon” in its full red-copper color. This occurs because sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter wavelengths like blue and violet while red light, with its longer wavelength, reaches the moon. Meteorologist Shane Hinton explained that the red hue is similar to the color seen during sunsets. The next total lunar eclipse and Blood Moon will occur in 2029. The full moon was also called the “Worm Moon.”
NEXT Weather meteorologist Shane Hinton says the moon appeared to have a red or copper color during the eclipse because longer wavelengths of light — red, orange, yellow — made it through Earth’s atmosphere.

‘Deportation Depot’ begins operations outside Jacksonville
SUMMARY: Florida has opened its second migrant detention center, the “Deportation Depot,” at Baker Correctional Institution near Jacksonville, holding 117 detainees with capacity for up to 1,500. This expansion follows a federal appeals court’s decision to keep the first facility, “Alligator Alcatraz,” operational despite legal challenges. Governor Ron DeSantis praised both centers as key to his immigration enforcement agenda, with plans for a third facility underway. Staffed by the National Guard and funded by a $600 million federal grant, the new site aims to address what DeSantis calls an immigration crisis. Critics warn of overcrowding and poor conditions, echoing concerns from the Everglades facility.
