Man speaks again in medical-first brain implant breakthrough

SUMMARY: Researchers at UC Davis have developed an AI-powered brain implant that enables people with paralysis, such as those with ALS or stroke, to communicate by decoding their speech-related brain signals into audible words. In 2023, Casey Harrell received sensors implanted in his brain; initially, his attempted speech appeared on a screen, but after over a year, the system now vocalizes his words. This breakthrough allows modulation of pitch and has been described as life-changing by doctors. While currently only about half of the decoded words are intelligible, researchers aim for full accuracy and commercial availability in the coming years.

Casey Harrell, who lost his voice to ALS 5 years ago, can now communicate in real time thanks to an interface which turns brain activity into speech.
