SUMMARY: The FDA has banned the food dye Red 3 from the U.S. food supply, citing cancer risks previously linked to lab studies on rats. This decision follows a 2022 petition from health advocates and a long-standing double standard where the dye was prohibited in cosmetics but allowed in foods. Manufacturers have until January 2027 to eliminate the dye from food products and until January 2028 for ingested drugs. Advocacy groups welcome the ban, emphasizing its importance for protecting children, who consume more of the dye relative to their body weight. Other countries, including Europe, already have similar bans in place.
