Living Shorelines Workshop helps landowners combat erosion, protect habitat
SUMMARY: The Living Shorelines Workshop in Moss Point helps Mississippi waterfront landowners combat erosion and protect habitats using natural, sustainable methods. Living shorelines stabilize coastal property with native marsh grasses, natural slopes, rocks, or shells. Hosted at the Pascal River Autobond Center, these workshops are part of a series by Mississippi State University Coastal and Marine Extension, supported by the Mississippi Alabama Sea Grant Consortium and Mississippi Sound Estuary Program. Participants receive free shoreline assessments, customized design plans, and permitting assistance. With costs between $50 to $300 per linear foot, living shorelines offer an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional bulkheads and seawalls.
As erosion carves away at Mississippi’s coastal properties and tidal surges creep farther inland, landowners are searching for alternatives to costly seawalls.

Weather Why: What is a tropical invest?
SUMMARY: A tropical invest is an area under investigation for tropical activity but not yet named. These areas often bring heavy rain but typically don’t strengthen rapidly. When an invest develops a closed circulation, a well-defined center, and organized thunderstorms around the center, it becomes a tropical system. Tropical systems are classified by wind speeds: less than 39 mph is a tropical depression, 39 mph or greater is a tropical storm, and 74 mph or higher is a hurricane. Invests are numbered 90 to 99, cycling back to 90 after 99, with a letter suffix indicating the ocean basin, such as “L” for Atlantic.
‘Invest’ is typically used to describe disturbances that have not yet been named.
