SUMMARY: WRBE, a local radio station in Lucedale, has been serving the community for 63 years. The station was first aired in 1960 by Galloway Corley and has changed ownership multiple times over the years. The call letters for the station were initially WHHT and then changed to WRBE as a tribute to the local high school mascot. In 1990, an FM frequency was added, and the station adopted the same WRBE call letters for both AM and FM. The station primarily plays country music and also serves as a news outlet, covers local high school sports, and hosts a daily swap shop session. Larry Shirley, the current owner, bought the station in 1998. Shirley got into the radio business in 1967 and had previously worked with Herman Kelly, the former owner of WRBE. Despite their differences, Shirley decided to buy the station and has never regretted it.

From Corn to Cuisine: The Culinary Revolution of 1492

SUMMARY: Before Europeans discovered the Americas, their diet lacked tomatoes, corn, potatoes, and many other staples now common in Europe. Native Americans had cultivated diverse foods like peppers, beans, squash, and corn, especially the “three sisters” (corn, beans, squash), which revolutionized European diets after their introduction. This exchange, part of the Columbian Exchange, also included European livestock and grains introduced to the Americas. Sadly, Europeans brought diseases like smallpox that devastated Native populations. Additionally, the spice trade with Asia and the Middle East enriched European flavor palettes. Overall, the transatlantic exchanges dramatically transformed food cultures on both continents after 1492.
