SUMMARY: Instagram’s new location-sharing feature, similar to Snapchat’s, allows users to share real-time locations on a map. However, unlike Snapchat, Instagram users often have followers they don’t know, raising safety concerns. Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn and Senator Richard Blumenthal criticize the feature for risking exploitation, especially of teens. Many users report being opted in without consent. University of Tennessee professor Matthew Pittman calls the update sudden and linked to data collection to keep users engaged. Meta states location sharing is opt-in, but lawmakers urge the company to disable the feature, emphasizing the need for stronger online safety laws like the Kids Online Safety Act.

Some say this is an unwanted update that shares your real-time location.
