Keep your pets safe during hurricane season: experts share advice on go-bags and safe spaces
SUMMARY: During hurricane season, preparing your pets is essential. Experts recommend keeping a go-bag with two weeks’ worth of food, water, and medications, along with updated vaccination records and collars with contact information. This ensures access to shelters or hotels and helps caregivers provide proper care. During storms, keep pets indoors in a quiet, enclosed space with their favorite toys and blankets to reduce stress. Using noise machines with soothing sounds can further calm them. Veterinarians note that tropical storms increase pet injuries, such as dog bites and debris exposure. Early preparation ensures safety and well-being for your entire family.
During hurricane season, residents are inundated with storm prep information, but now local emergency veterinarians are reminding residents to keep their pets in mind as well this hurricane season.
Dr. Alex MacLean, the Medical Director at VEG ER for Pets in Mount Pleasant says, “when you’re scrambling is when you forget important things.”
She explains that this is why keeping a go-bag for both you and your pets is crucial during hurricane season, especially if evacuation becomes a possibility.

Texas floods leave at least 51 dead, 27 girls missing as rescuers search devastated landscape
SUMMARY: Heavy flash flooding struck Kerr County, Texas, killing at least 43 people, including 15 children, after the Guadalupe River surged 26 feet in 45 minutes early July 5, 2025. The flood devastated Camp Mystic and surrounding areas, leaving 27 girls missing from the camp. Despite weather warnings issued hours earlier, the fast-moving waters caught many by surprise. Rescue teams used helicopters, boats, and drones to save over 850 people and searched through mangled debris for survivors. Officials faced scrutiny over preparedness and warnings. The governor declared a day of prayer. The Hill Country’s terrain makes it prone to flash floods, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

'Big, Beautiful Bill' threatens SNAP benefits for thousands of South Carolinians
SUMMARY: Thousands of South Carolinians could lose SNAP (food stamp) benefits if President Trump signs the major budget bill known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” This legislation proposes significant funding cuts and changes to eligibility, potentially reducing SNAP funding by $295 billion over ten years. About 30,000 households in the Tri-County area rely on SNAP, with 17,000 able-bodied adults aged up to 54 at risk of losing benefits due to stricter work requirements. Federal cuts may force South Carolina to cover 5-15% of costs. Advocates warn nonprofit efforts won’t close the large gap, pushing more families into poverty and creating administrative burdens.
Tens of thousands of South Carolinians could lose nutrition assistance if President Donald Trump signs a major budget bill into law in the coming days.
The so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” would cut funding and change eligibility requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) program, or better known as food stamps.
SNAP is currently fully federally funded but could see a budget reduction of about $295 billion over a decade, in Senate Republicans’ latest push to make the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent.
