In the hard-hit Pearson Falls area, kayaker Mason Harrove utilizes his paddling skills to assist cut-off communities, including Green River Cove. Alongside fellow paddler DNE Jackson, he navigates hazardous waters to deliver food and conduct wellness checks. Volunteering with the support of Erica Shanks from the environmental group Mountain True, they are organizing supplies and providing aid before governmental assistance arrives. As search and rescue missions continue, officials have yet to determine the number of fatalities amidst the ongoing crisis in Saluda.

The devastation across Western North Carolina continues to grow, with roads and rivers now unrecognizable. WRAL’s Eric Miller spoke with a kayaker about how he’s using his paddling skills to reach communities cut off from the outside.
