Judge agrees to release dash cam footage in deadly Raleigh crash case
SUMMARY: A judge ordered the release of body and dash cam footage related to a deadly October 2024 crash in Raleigh that killed Tyrone Mason and led to two state troopers being placed on leave. The footage was sought by a media coalition, including ABC11. Trooper Garrett Marquario and his supervisor are accused of lying about the crash, with Marquario allegedly hiding an attempted traffic stop before the crash. Raleigh police consented to the release, while the State Highway Patrol opposed it due to ongoing internal and FBI investigations. Wake County DA did not object and has dropped nearly 200 cases involving the troopers over credibility concerns. Both troopers remain on administrative leave.

Two state troopers are accused of lying about the events leading up to the single-car crash in October 2024.

Conference attendees decry bill banning unauthorized camping, sleeping on public land
SUMMARY: Since June, over 170 communities have enacted ordinances banning unauthorized camping, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Donald Whitehead, Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless, spoke at the “Bringing it Home 2025” conference, urging opposition to North Carolina’s House Bill 781, which would criminalize unauthorized camping. Whitehead argued criminalization doesn’t solve homelessness, citing studies that show arrests cost communities millions. Governor Josh Stein opposed the bill, advocating for affordable housing solutions. Advocates fear the bill’s passage could diminish local autonomy and increase fiscal responsibility, while policies from the Cicero Institute might profit from criminalizing poverty.

Walmart raising some prices, blames Trump tariffs
SUMMARY: Walmart has announced that product prices will rise due to tariffs, particularly a 30% tariff on Chinese goods. Economists predict price increases across many categories, including electronics, clothing, and bananas, especially for imported items. Items like watermelon and some local brands may remain unaffected. Walmart’s admission signals that other retailers may follow suit, leading to a potential long-term price surge. Despite the price hikes, shoppers are advised to compare prices at different stores, shop locally when possible, and consider thrifting to avoid tariff impacts. Walmart remains a leader in low-price offerings, though challenges lie ahead for consumers.

Higher prices began to appear on Walmart shelves in late April and accelerated this month, Walmart executives said Thursday.
