Judge rules NCAA schools can now pay athletes
SUMMARY: A federal judge approved a $2.8 billion settlement allowing NCAA schools to pay student-athletes up to $20 million annually over ten years, recognizing athletes’ contributions and time investment. This payout could amount to about 50% of sports revenue, also covering back pay for former athletes. Funding will likely require cuts to coaches’ salaries, facilities, and non-revenue sports, including Olympic events. Roster limits may reduce opportunities for walk-ons, and concerns remain that wealthier universities will benefit disproportionately. Additionally, ongoing litigation seeks to classify athletes as university employees, potentially affecting future athlete compensation and benefits.

The judge’s ruling says schools can pay up to $20.8 million a year to student athletes.

Georgia GOP's attempt to block Brad Raffensperger from running as a Republican may go nowhere
SUMMARY: Georgia Republicans overwhelmingly passed a resolution to bar Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger from running as a Republican, citing his refusal to aid Trump in overturning the 2020 election results. However, party chairman Josh McKoon said state law likely prevents disqualifying Raffensperger unless he falsely swears a loyalty oath. Georgia’s open primary system complicates defining true party members, with debates ongoing over whether parties can exclude candidates not aligned with their values. Attempts to enforce stricter candidate qualifications have faced legal challenges, highlighting tensions between party control and voter choice within Georgia’s GOP.
