Jeffries says all options on the table as Democrats push back against redistricting
SUMMARY: Texas Democrats, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, vow to fight aggressively against Texas Republicans’ mid-decade congressional redistricting efforts, which began amid recovery from deadly July 4 flooding. The GOP, pushed by Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott, aims to redraw maps to secure up to five additional Republican seats, increasing their majority to nearly 80%, despite already holding nearly two-thirds of Texas seats with only 56% of the vote. Democrats warn this plan risks violating the Voting Rights Act and pledge legal challenges, targeting vulnerable GOP incumbents while promoting fairness and protecting democracy. Some Democrats consider retaliatory redistricting in states like California and New York.

Talking to kids about natural disasters in aftermath of Texas floods
SUMMARY: The recent Texas floods are difficult for all ages, especially children, who often face these disasters indirectly through media. Dr. Lori Peek, sociology professor and disaster expert, emphasizes the importance of talking openly with kids about such events rather than avoiding the subject. Drawing from a long-term study following children affected by Hurricane Katrina, she highlights the need to restore routines while remaining flexible, as disasters disrupt normal life. Many children hide their trauma to protect stressed adults, so caregivers must create safe spaces for kids to express their feelings and begin healing after a disaster.
