‘It’s dangerous’: SCDOT seeking to replace Jasper County bridge, congestion concerns
SUMMARY: Jasper County, South Carolina, faces growing infrastructure challenges due to increased traffic on the South Carolina 462 bridge over Euhaw Creek at the Ridgeland town line. The bridge, burdened by cars, trucks, and buses from areas like Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head, has weight limits and narrow roadway warnings but remains congested and dangerous, with several fatal accidents reported. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to allocate approximately \$6.9 million to replace the bridge and is currently accepting public comments on the project until June 12. Some residents oppose the rapid development, advocating to “Save the Euhaw district.”

3 storms down, peak ahead: What to expect this hurricane season
SUMMARY: The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is off to a dangerous start, marked by deadly inland flooding from Tropical Storms Barry and Chantal. Forecasters at Colorado State University still expect an above-average season, predicting 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. While a late start and Caribbean wind shear have slightly reduced earlier forecasts, warm Atlantic waters and neutral El Niño conditions favor continued storm development. The risk of a major U.S. landfall remains high at 48%. Experts urge residents to prepare for water-related hazards, as rainfall, not wind, has proven the season’s most dangerous feature so far.

Statesboro man sentenced for shooting cop
SUMMARY: Anthony Kent, 19, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting Statesboro Officer Joey Deloach during an April incident. Deloach was responding to reports of car break-ins at Copper Beech apartments when he was shot four times, injuring a major artery in his leg. Despite defense arguments citing Kent’s youth and behavioral issues, the judge imposed a lengthy sentence, emphasizing accountability and urging Kent to improve himself. Kent apologized in court, claiming self-defense. Police and the community supported Deloach, with authorities deeming the sentence appropriate for the severity of the crime impacting the community.
