Iris Garden Club talks about preserving garden beauty at 5th Street Marina
SUMMARY: The Iris Garden Club, established in 1949, maintains a perennial garden beneath the train tracks at Augusta’s 5th Street Marina. Led by Bonnie McClain, who has served for 25 years, the club organizes regular cleanups and plantings, often incorporating plants donated in honor of significant events. The garden, which survived flooding from Helene, provides a free, peaceful spot by the water for volunteers and visitors alike. It attracts local families, school children, and tourists, fostering community connections. The club invites volunteers to join their workdays, typically held the first Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Education Department restarts interest accrual for borrowers on SAVE plan
SUMMARY: The Education Department announced that interest on student loans under the SAVE plan will resume on August 1. The SAVE plan, introduced during the Biden administration to offer low or zero monthly payments, was struck down as illegal by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court. Since the ruling, borrowers have been in forbearance without interest accrual, possibly lasting until 2026. The Department criticized the Biden administration for misleading borrowers with false loan forgiveness promises. With new congressional rules, borrowers must shift to either a standard repayment plan or the new Repayment Assistance Plan by 2028. The Department urges affected borrowers to switch to compliant plans soon.

Wash new clothes before you wear them
SUMMARY: Consumer Reports advises washing new clothes before wearing them to remove chemicals and irritants from manufacturing that can cause skin irritation, especially for sensitive skin and babies. New garments, often made overseas, can also pick up dust, dirt, and bugs during shipping and handling. Washing clothes with similar colors in cold water on a gentle cycle helps prevent fading and shrinking. Use gentle detergents like Pur Everyday Clean Free or Costco’s Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Free and Clear. Always follow care labels and avoid fabric softeners, as they may irritate skin, leave residue, and increase flammability of fabrics.
Consumer Reports break down the reason why it’s important to do so.
