SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton struck Florida’s west coast near Siesta Key as a Category 3 storm late Wednesday, weakening to a Category 1 by 1 a.m. It left over 3.2 million residents without power and caused extensive flooding and wind damage, prompting mandatory evacuations and a state of emergency for 51 counties. SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has shifted his focus from immigration to crime, boosting his approval ratings. A recent AP-NORC poll shows 53% of U.S. adults approve of his tough-on-crime approach, surpassing support for his handling of immigration, the economy, or the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump’s takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police and National Guard deployment, despite violent crime declines and local opposition, highlights this pivot. This follows a federal judge’s order to close the center by late October, which Florida and the federal government are appealing. The facility, opened in July with over $245 million spent, has faced opposition from environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe due to threats to sensitive wetlands. The judge mandated detainee transfers and removal of infrastructure, while Florida plans a second center called “Deportation Depot.” The stay request decision is pending.
