How to help children cope with stress and fear of severe weather
SUMMARY: Severe weather can cause significant stress and fear in children, making it crucial to help them process these events and recover. Project Camp, founded by Mikey Latner and Azie Baron, provides free trauma-informed day camps for children aged 5 to 16 affected by disasters. These camps create a safe, familiar environment with activities like games, sports, and arts to promote healing and routine. Child psychologist Dr. Mark Pasano notes that weather anxiety can show as physical symptoms or behavioral changes. Parents should encourage open communication, model calm behavior, and seek professional help if needed. Project Camp supports both kids and families during recovery.

Managing the stress of severe storms and tropical systems can be hard for adults, but especially difficult for children.

Old Durham Police HQ plans in limbo: ‘It’s valuable property’
SUMMARY: Plans to redevelop Durham’s former police headquarters on West Chapel Hill Boulevard remain uncertain. The four-acre, five-story building has been vacant since 2018 and is seen as valuable both fiscally and communally. The City Council is considering priorities like affordable housing, historic preservation, mixed-use development, and creating a new downtown landmark that honors local history. The Peebles Corporation proposed a \$382 million mixed-use project including 200 affordable housing units, retail, office or lab space, and a hotel, requesting a \$78 million city subsidy. However, negotiations may be canceled, marking the city’s third redevelopment attempt for this property.

The old Durham Police Department headquarters has become an eyesore along West Chapel Hill Street, and the city continues wrestling with what to do about it.

Rubio in talks for return of wrongly deported ‘Cristian,’ in flip for Trump administration
SUMMARY: On May 21, 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio testified before Congress and is personally working to secure the return of “Cristian,” a man wrongly deported to El Salvador’s brutal CECOT prison, according to Trump administration court filings. This effort marks a rare reversal of the administration’s stance that El Salvador, not the U.S., holds custody over deportees sent there. The Trump-appointed judge criticized the administration’s lack of compliance with her orders to facilitate Cristian’s return. Rubio’s longstanding ties with El Salvador aid negotiation efforts. Meanwhile, another deportee, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, remains detained despite a Supreme Court order for his return.
