How scammers could try to profit off cars flooded by Hurricane Helene
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helene flooded 23,000 vehicles, and scammers are taking advantage of this disaster by reselling these cars to unsuspecting buyers. Some of these vehicles are cleaned up and resold without being properly branded as flood-damaged, while others are being sold in states with more lenient title laws to avoid the flood damage designation. Buyers are advised to inspect cars for signs of water damage, such as stained carpets, odd smells, and malfunctioning electronics. Experts warn that these vehicles may develop significant issues over time, including electrical problems and rust, making them unreliable and dangerous.
Experts estimate that 23,000 cars, trucks and SUVs were flooded in North Carolina during Hurricane Helene. As those cars go to auction, they could fall into the hands of scammers looking to profit off those vehicles at your expense. WRAL 5 On Your Side Producer Pritchard Strong explains the warning signs to look out for.

Biologists are using drones to scare wolves away from cattle
SUMMARY: Biologists and the Agriculture Department are using drones equipped with thermal cameras to protect cattle from wolves. The drones detect wolves near livestock and scare them away by playing sounds through loudspeakers, including fireworks, gunshots, rock songs, and most effectively, human voices like yelling or movie clips. Gray wolves, once nearly extinct, have rebounded in the U.S., posing challenges for ranchers as wolves target easier prey like cattle. Ranchers appreciate the drone technology, but worry wolves may eventually ignore the deterrents. So far, the drones have successfully reduced cattle deaths in Oregon and California.
A team of biologists working near the California-Oregon border is using drones to blast AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” movie clips and live human voices to shoo wolves away from cattle in an ongoing experiment.

Fact check: Vance says Trump signed ‘biggest tax cut’ in US history
SUMMARY: Vice President J.D. Vance claimed that the Trump administration’s recent “big beautiful bill” enacted the biggest tax cuts in U.S. history. However, a fact check by Politifact reveals this is inaccurate. By comparing tax cuts as a percentage of GDP, the largest tax cut was actually signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981. The recent Trump bill ranks about sixth in modern history. When combined with Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, they become the third largest overall. While significant, these cuts are not the biggest ever, leading Politifact to rate Vance’s claim as mostly false.
Speaking in Peachtree City near Atlanta, Vice President JD Vance said, “We had the biggest tax cut for families that this country has ever seen.”

NC Labor Day 2025: A state that’s best for business is also ranked worst for workers
SUMMARY: North Carolina, ranked Top State for Business in 2025 by CNBC, fares poorly in Oxfam America’s Best States to Work Index, placing 52nd due to low wages and weak worker protections. The state’s minimum wage has stagnated at $7.25 since 2009, covering only 18% of living costs for a family of four, far below Virginia’s $12.41. North Carolina also lacks paid family and medical leave, heat safety standards, and fair scheduling. “Right-to-work” laws limit union support, harming worker organizing. Women, especially women of color, face economic disparities, childcare burdens, and low preschool enrollment rates. Experts urge raising wages and mandating paid leave to improve conditions.
