Homeowners impacted by Helene face new requirement to raise homes off the ground
SUMMARY: Homeowners in the county affected by Hurricane Helene must now raise their homes more than six feet to rebuild, posing a financial and emotional challenge, especially for elderly, disabled veterans, and retirees. Edward Gossman, a 70-year-old veteran, faced delays and tough choices between elevating his home or moving uphill, with costly mortgage implications. Damage assessments, which determine if a home must be lifted, were inconsistent and delayed, causing confusion. County assessor Macy Reed acknowledged training gaps but defended the damage evaluations. Homeowners report poor communication and lack of assistance. Officials urge residents to appeal and provide rebuilding guidance on the county website.

Many homeowners, including disabled veterans and retirees, are being told they have to raise their homes several feet off the ground.
