Holly Springs Salamanders catcher is league’s first female baseball player
SUMMARY: A historic moment unfolded as the Holly Springs Salamanders welcomed their first female baseball player, a catcher who joined the team just three days ago. In her debut, she went one for three, scoring a run and earning player of the game honors in front of over 1,500 fans. Growing up playing T-ball with her brother, she overcame doubts and criticism about her ability to compete in baseball, using those challenges as motivation. Embracing the supportive environment in North Carolina and the team’s camaraderie, she helped lead the Salamanders to an 11-1 victory with 14 hits, including her own.

Holly Springs Salamanders catcher Alexia Jorge is making history as the first woman in the Coastal Plain League. Alexia Jorge, who just finished her senior season playing baseball at Saint Elizabeth’s University, was named player of the game Saturday night in the Salamanders’ 11-to-1 win over the Carolina Pirates. In that match, she became the first woman baseball player to start in a CPL game.

5-year-old girl surprised after crying over missing guacamole
SUMMARY: A 5-year-old Colorado girl, Story Massa, went viral after crying when Quodoba (Quudoba) forgot her guacamole order. Her tearful reaction gained millions of social media views, with many sympathizing with her. This wasn’t Story’s first viral moment; she also drew attention last year for humorously grading classmates during a school Christmas program. After the guacamole incident, Quodoba invited Story and her family to a local store, where she was named their “Chief Guacamole Officer” and helped make guacamole alongside Chef Katie. Story happily forgave Quodoba after this special experience, and she remains passionate about singing and dancing, often sharing fun moments online.

Qdoba made Stori Massa an honorary Chief Guacamole Officer after the restaurant chain forgot the avocado-based spread in her order.

RFK Jr. ends COVID vaccine recommendation for healthy children, pregnant people
SUMMARY: On January 29, 2025, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine skeptic, announced that healthy children and pregnant people no longer need the COVID-19 vaccine, removing it from the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule. He offered no new evidence to justify the change. NIH Director Bhattacharya and FDA Commissioner Makary supported it without citing data. Public health experts, including obstetricians and pediatrics leaders, strongly opposed the decision, warning it ignores science and could jeopardize vulnerable groups. Former Surgeon General Jerome Adams and the American Public Health Association criticized the policy for restricting access and risking public health, stressing vaccines remain vital for protection.
